About Us

Our mission is to provide high-quality healthcare

The year 2002 was very significant for the hospital: it became a Teaching Hospital, providing education for students of the Department of Nursing at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Health Care of Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra. Later, the Department of Nursing was joined by the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Department of Physiotherapy and Balneology. In addition to the faculty’s core staff, the educational process is also ensured by the hospital’s physicians. In the same year, 2002, the Hospital with Polyclinic became the Teaching Hospital.
At the end of 2003, the paediatric department moved from the building under Zobor to the hospital campus, into the former ENT department building.

The 1980s and 1990s of the last century were years of construction of new pavilions. In 1992, the new Pavilion II of the Internal Medicine Clinic and Neurology, “Olympia”, was put into operation, and in the same year the foundation stone was laid for the new pavilion of surgical disciplines, which was completed in 1997. It brought together the following clinics: surgery, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, ENT, KAIM, and orthopaedics and traumatology. Since 2009, the emergency medicine unit has been relocated to PCHD. The pavilion also houses the CT and radiology unit of the company Jessenius. All units, outpatient clinics, clinics, and departments are interconnected via the intranet.

In the first post-war years after liberation, it was possible to observe an expansion of hospital premises and growth in staffing. In 1946, another separate paediatric department was established, in 1947 an ENT department, and in 1951 an ophthalmology department. In 1963, a modern gynaecology-obstetrics and urology pavilion was put into operation. The number of beds reached 972; in 1966, a cobalt bomb was installed in the oncology department. The year 1972 was significant for the paediatric department, which moved to a new modern building under Zobor, where paediatric outpatient clinics and the inpatient ward were located.

The first director of the hospital under Kalvária was MUDr. Biringer, who was instrumental in purchasing the first X-ray machine in 1902. Nursing and auxiliary work in the kitchen and on the wards, as well as in the administrative section, was carried out by the religious sisters of the Vincentian order. The year 1920 was significant in that electric lighting was introduced throughout the entire hospital campus; gas was then used only for heating. During the war years, the Nitra hospital had 652 beds and, after the hospitals in Bratislava and Martin, was the third largest in Slovakia.

The beginnings of the hospital in Nitra date back to 1834, when two hospital buildings were constructed at the end of Párovce, by the road to Mlynárce. Later, the hospital in Párovce no longer met requirements, either in terms of location or bed capacity. The county assembly decided to build a new hospital at a new site. It has been located at the current “Pod Kalváriou” premises since 1894. The hospital’s total capacity at its opening was 151 beds.
